Taiwan kicks off series of events to commemorate Shakespeare

Taiwan will hold a series of events to commemorate the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth this year, the organizers said Friday.

The events will continue until 2016, the 400th anniversary of the literary giant’s death, they added.

During this time, the British Council in Taiwan, in collaboration with various institutions, government agencies and enterprises, will hold a series of events, including drama, dance, literature and exhibitions, said Lai Hsin-yuan, the council’s Taipei director.

“We would like to use this opportunity to link Taiwan with the rest of the world,” Lai said at a press conference.

One of the highlights will be a performance of Romeo and Juliet by the Royal Ballet at Taipei’s National Theater in late June, he added.
