Renowned Gujarati poet Mehul Devlaka’s poems plagiarised by fellow poet Gautam Vegda of plagiarism, sparking outrage in the literary community.
In a recent controversy that has sparked debates in the literary community, Indian poet Mehul Devkala has claimed that Gautam Vegda has plagiarized his work. Devkala claims that Vegda’s poem, “Cicada,” which was recited at an international poetry festival in China, bears a striking resemblance to two of his own Gujarati poems, published almost a decade ago. The incident came to light when Gautam Vegda posted a video of his recitation on social media. Devkala, upon viewing the video, was taken aback by the similarities between Vegda’s poem and his own works. “The title, flow, and concept of the poem are quite matching,” Devkala stated. He further noted that one image and the ending of Vegda’s poem were similar to those in his poem “Two Cities.” “Any person with a literary sense can see impressions of two of my poems in Gautam Vegda’s poem ‘Cicada’,” he added.
Devkala took to social media to express his concerns, and Vegda responded, acknowledging the similarities but insisting they were purely coincidental. Vegda’s reply, however, did little to assuage Devkala’s unease. “The only disturbing thing here is that two of my poems got impressions in his single poem. Isn’t that strange?” Devkala questioned.

In a public Facebook post by Devlaka, notable figures such as Saroop Dhruv, Himanshi Shelat, Parul Khakhar, and other prominent members of the Gujarati literary community expressed their condemnation.
Inspiration or Plagiarism?
The controversy raises important questions about the thin line between inspiration and plagiarism in the literary world. While poets often draw inspiration from various sources, the degree of similarity in this case has led to suspicions of intellectual property theft. The literary community has been divided, with some supporting Devkala’s claims and others suggesting that similarities in themes and imagery could indeed be coincidental.
Plagiarism is a serious accusation in the literary world, as it undermines the original creator’s efforts and intellectual property. This incident highlights the need for clear guidelines and ethical standards in literary creations. It also underscores the importance of respecting and acknowledging the work of fellow writers to maintain the integrity of the craft.
As the debate continues, it serves as a reminder for writers to be vigilant and respectful of each other’s work. Whether this case is one of plagiarism or an unfortunate coincidence, it has certainly ignited a conversation about originality and ethics in the literary world.
