“I think books can be powerful when they are read, spread and used by others and get a life of their own.” Alpa Shah (Author- The Incarcerations)

Journalist Umer Beigh is in conversation with author Alpa Shah on her latest book The Incarcerations (Published by Harper Collins India, 2024) where they talk about the journey behind the book.

In her latest book, Alpa Shah reiterates her experience in writing her second book that has been shortlisted for the 2024 Moore Prize for Human Rights Writing and Orwell Prize. She shares that when 16 intellectuals fighting for democracy and justice were unprecedentedly targeted by the rightwing BJP-led government, she felt an abiding sense of the need to turn the writing into art, an aesthetic experience that may move people all over the world into caring about the incarcerated intellectuals and activists. Her book builds a strong case to expose state crackdown on dissent, providing shocking revelations and anecdotes of cyber warfare by blaming police apparatus for fabrication and framing politically charged cases. Seven of BK-16 activists have so far been granted bail.
