The black night outside clouded his soul as Arjun lay huddled on his bed, the stench of his mother’s burning body still searing his nostrils, even though Anjoli Maasi had forced him to change after the crematorium. An exhausted sleep waited uneasily on his eyelids as the splinter of light from the doorway widened and narrowed; then he thought he felt a long-ago presence in the empty darkness, the shadow of a hand in his own, and slumber finally claimed him.
Anjoli shut the door gently, relieved that Arjun was finally asleep, but disturbed at what her sister had just said “What do you mean, Arjun thought he saw Sunita? She died a year ago…”
