Five Years of Stories, Growth, and Gratitude: A Journey with Kitaab

4 min read

A personal note about her journey as Namrata completes five years of being the editor of Kitaab this month.

As I look back on my five years as the editor of Kitaab, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and reflection. This journey has been one of immense learning, constant evolution, and the privilege of being part of a literary community that is as diverse as it is vibrant. Kitaab has always stood as a bridge between cultures, voices, and stories, and being at the helm of this incredible platform has been nothing short of an honor.

When I took on this role, I knew I was stepping into big shoes. Under the visionary leadership of our Editor-in-Chief, Zafar Anjum, Kitaab had already established itself as a space where words mattered, and where storytelling transcended borders. Zafar’s guidance and unwavering support have been instrumental in shaping my approach as an editor, and I am deeply thankful for his mentorship.

We’d love to hear from you! Whether you’re a reader, contributor, or supporter of Kitaab, if you have any thoughts, feedback, or words of appreciation, please share them with us. You can leave a comment or write to us directly at editor@kitaabinternational.com — we truly value your voice.

These five years have been marked by an explosion of voices and perspectives. We’ve published works that challenge, inspire, and provoke thought — pieces that capture the nuances of our times and those that delve into the timeless. I have had the joy of working with writers from across the globe, each bringing their unique lens to our shared narrative. It’s been a privilege to nurture new talent. and to celebrate established voices, all while staying true to Kitaab’s mission of fostering literary dialogue.

A Journey into Words: From an Unlikely Path to the Editor’s Desk

Beyond the editorial work, these years have been a journey of personal growth. I’ve learned the delicate art of balancing vision with voice, of knowing when to guide and when to step back and let a story unfold in its own rhythm. There have been challenges, of course — moments of doubt and the ever-present pressure to keep up with an evolving literary landscape. Yet through it all, the love for storytelling and the belief in the power of words have kept me going.

I didn’t come from a writing background. I wasn’t formally trained in the craft, nor did I have the credentials that literary purists might expect of an editor. When I stepped into the world of publishing, particularly into the role of editing a magazine, skepticism followed. Could someone without a conventional literary pedigree truly nurture and shape stories? Was passion enough to bridge the gap?

The doubts weren’t just external; I carried them within me too. But what I did have—what I had always had—was an unshakable love for the written word. Stories had been my quiet companions for as long as I could remember. I had lived in their pages, found solace in their rhythms, and learned to listen to the unspoken truths they carried. And maybe, just maybe, that was what truly mattered.

Over time, as I worked with writers, refining their voices while honoring their intent, I realized that storytelling is not just about rules and formal training. It is about understanding rhythm, emotion, and the delicate balance between what is said and what is left unsaid. Slowly, the skepticism faded—not because I fit into a mold, but because the work spoke for itself.

Looking back now, I see that the road to writing and editing doesn’t have to be linear. Sometimes, love for the craft is the only qualification that truly matters. And perhaps that is enough.

Looking Ahead

I am excited to announce the launch of a new column, Between the Lines. This weekly column, published every Friday, will explore the cultural, emotional, and thematic depth in books, both classic and contemporary. Through these pieces, I hope to uncover the layers that lie beneath the surface of the stories we love, the unsaid, the implied, and the deeply felt.

I want to thank every writer, reader, and contributor who has been part of this journey. Your words have been the heartbeat of this magazine, and your engagement has given it life. As we look ahead, my hope is that Kitaab continues to be a space where stories flourish, where voices find resonance, and where the love for literature binds us together.

Here’s to many more years of storytelling, discovery, and connection.
