New Writing Workshop by bestselling author Kiran Manral hosted by The Story Company

Dear Writer,

There comes a point in every writer’s journey when the question is no longer Can I write?

It becomes How do I stop sounding like everyone else?

Most writing advice focuses on technique. Grammar. Plot. Structure. Character.

All of these matter. But none of them will make your writing unforgettable.

Voice will.

Your voice is the one thing no one else can replicate. It makes a reader recognise your work without seeing your name. It transforms competent writing into compelling writing.

After conducting my Creative Writing for Beginners masterclass, I realised that the next step for many aspiring writers is not learning more rules. It is learning to trust their own voice.

When I first began writing, my voice was an enthusiastic cocktail of the writers I loved most. There was the comic absurdity of P. G. Wodehouse, the sharp wit of Erma Bombeck, the irreverence and humanity of Terry Pratchett, and countless other influences that found their way onto the page. That is perfectly natural. Every writer begins by echoing the voices that have shaped them.

It has taken me nineteen books, written across humour, crime, horror, literary fiction, memoir and non-fiction, to arrive at something that feels unmistakably my own. Or perhaps I should say that my own voice, and the various registers in which my voice can speak. Because our voice evolves with every book we write, every experience we live through, and every story we choose to tell.

That is what this masterclass is about. Not learning to write like someone you admire but discovering what only you can write.

Finding Your Voice: Write Like No One Else Can

In this practical, interactive two-hour session, we will explore:

• Why voice matters more than style
• How writers develop an authentic voice over time
• Why imitation is an essential part of finding originality
• Practical writing exercises to uncover your natural rhythm and perspective

Whether you write fiction, memoir, blogs, essays, Substack newsletters or are only just beginning your writing journey, this masterclass will help you discover what makes your writing uniquely yours.
