In this short story, Mehreen Ahmed tells a tale of murder and mayhem with mysterious twists and turns taking us from morning to night with a twist that leaves the reader agape.

Morning

Last summer when the days were waning, my young neighbour Poultu, a twelve-year-old, entered through my garden gate, sweating profusely. He stumbled over a loose plank on the garden path.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“The panipuri man has returned. Kids are going missing again.”

“Don’t worry.”

“What? Why not?”

“I’ll make sure to protect you.”
