Short Story: Manna at the Doorstep by K.S. Subramanian
1 min read
In this short story, K.S. Subramanian talks about an enterprising, aspiring young girl narrated in a poignant manner, mindful of the emerging environment.
Nivedita had just returned from school only to be greeted by her mother sternly.
“Niveda! I am too tired to wash those vessels. I need your help. Do not fret and fume. I know you are tired too.”
Nivedita knew it as well as one of those life’s truisms that the Sun always rose in the east. She didn’t flare up as normally girls of her age did. Neither was her mother wanton or cruel enough to push her into domestic work at 4 pm.
It was a loving family that cared and felt for each other without expressly being articulate about it. In fact they were routine-bound, took things in their stride, and stuck to matter-of-fact existence.
