Book Review: Night of the Snake by Snehaprava Das

Mitra Samal reviews Snehaprava Das’ short story collection Night of the Snake (Published by Black Eagle Books, 2023) observing how the author is a complete storyteller.

Night of the Snake by Snehaprava Das is a wonderful collection of short stories. Some are scintillating, some are poignant, and all are complete entertainers. The ones driven by the plot are gripping and keep you thrilled throughout. The ones driven by character make you smile or make your heart wail with sorrow. The author has used fine techniques to explore diverse themes and has very well succeeded in doing so.

The title story Night of the Snake shows the stark reality of life, pangs of hunger, poverty, and to what extent a person can go to make sacrifices for a better life. It is a very serious theme that the author has presented in this story and the ending might as well shatter you, but it only makes you aware of how desperate one can be. These concluding lines give you an emotional jerk:
