Short Story: Ellis Bridge Remand Room by Kaif Shaikh

1 min read

Kaif Shaikh shares a story based in the city of Ahmedabad, India, that weaves elements of psychological thriller and black comedy along with exploring themes of perception, confinement, and liberation through a strikingly original narrative.

One burning summer afternoon, three Idiots woke up strangled in the Ellis Bridge remand room with no notion of time. A corporate idealist, a student pseudo-activist, and a food delivery guy. Three different individuals, but friends, nonetheless.

Each at a different pace, dripping like wet cotton, in an oven-like cell with very little space for fresh air, let alone the chance to stretch their legs. Ahmedabad is a tropical city with May temperatures soaring up to 50 degrees Celsius. Here nobody pays heed to the traffic rules. The oppressive heat is rarely too hot for the people here, you can see them cracking like boiling eggs left and right, much desensitized to any form of oppression.
