Twenty Years of Kitaab: A Journey of Stories, Voices, and Dreams

3 min read

Namrata, the editor of Kitaab, shares a thank you note as we celebrate 20 years of Kitaab.

As Kitaab turns 20 this year, I find myself filled with a deep sense of gratitude and reflection. It is a rare privilege for a literary platform to sustain itself for two decades, and an even rarer one to thrive, evolve, and remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. As the editor of this magazine for the past five years, I have had the honour of witnessing and shaping this journey, one marked by passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the written word.

Kitaab has always been more than just a magazine. It has been a home for stories, those told and those waiting to be told. It has been a space where voices from across South Asia and the diaspora have come together, creating a tapestry of cultures, perspectives, and experiences. Through fiction, essays, poetry, and criticism, Kitaab has celebrated the diversity of our region, giving a platform to both established and emerging writers.

We’d love to hear from you! Whether you’re a reader, contributor, or supporter of Kitaab, if you have any thoughts, feedback, or words of appreciation, please share them with us. You can leave a comment or write to us directly at editor@kitaabinternational.com — we truly value your voice.

This milestone would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of our founder and Editor-in-Chief, Zafar Anjum. His belief in the power of literature to bridge divides and foster understanding has been the guiding light for this platform. Zafar’s mentorship and encouragement have allowed us to stay true to Kitaab’s mission while also exploring new directions and embracing fresh ideas. I extend my deepest gratitude to him for his tireless support and invaluable guidance.

Over the years, Kitaab has become a community of readers, writers, editors, and dreamers. Each piece published here carries the imprint of collective effort and shared love for storytelling. As an editor, I have been deeply moved by the trust our contributors place in us, sharing their most intimate thoughts, their boldest ideas, and their most vulnerable creations. It has been a privilege to nurture these voices and help shape their stories for the world to read.

But anniversaries are not just about looking back; they are also about envisioning the future. As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we remain committed to evolving with the times while staying rooted in our core values. We aim to continue providing a platform for underrepresented voices, to experiment with new forms of storytelling, and to foster conversations that challenge and inspire.

To our readers — Thank you! Your support, feedback, and engagement have kept us going. You have made this journey worthwhile.

To our writers — You are the heart of Kitaab. Without your words, there would be no magazine.

And to the entire Kitaab team — Your hard work behind the scenes has made every issue possible. I am grateful beyond words.

As we step into this new chapter, I hope we continue to grow together, to tell stories that matter, to listen with empathy, and to keep the spirit of curiosity alive.

Here’s to Kitaab, to 20 years of literature and love, and to many more ahead.

With warmth and gratitude,

Namrata
Editor, Kitaab
