6 min read

Ranga Chandrarathne reviews Asif Anwar Alig’s Dream Roads (BlueRose One, 2026), calling it a harbinger of dreams that showcases a journey from dusty paths to global horizons.

An engrossing read to the last page, Dream Roads by Asif Anwar Alig is a credible work of literature for several reasons. This contemplative memoir prudently sums up the author’s aspirations achieved. His modest rural upbringing hardly proved a constraint, but rather demonstrated the power of a strong will to achieve multifaceted professional attainment.

Beautifully tracing the author’s 25+ years of career trajectory in journalism, academia, and beyond, with a decade-long illustrious international exposure further honing him into a professional with global aptitude, this book presents compelling arguments on dreams, migration, and educational aspirations. He builds an identity by prioritizing determination and resilience to welcome success and to set an example for millions. Unique features like weaving his personal experiences with global socio-cultural commentary, this book insists that individual challenges never hinder if achieving goals with confidence is the primary aim. It is a thoughtful narrative, distilled into a memoir yet a historical recount.

Metaphorically structured in seven sections—déjà vu, les vicissitudes de la vie, delicia árabe, mutterliebe, estancia en el IIM, faith accompli, and la nostalgia, they portray distinct phases of life that the author brings before us. Forming a cohesive ‘roadmap of becoming,’ the chapters align to depict the author’s life stages, encompassing constant struggles, remarkable transformations, realizations, and resultant achievements. The book’s core theme is author’s rising from penury to gaining identity through determination, education, and relentless effort that hone him into a person and a professional. The book recounts many aspects of his early life, from penury and limited educational opportunities to the regular encounter with socio-economic constraints, and finally to overcoming them all to achieve something substantial and unachievable. The author crosses all barriers to pursue success and achieves it.

The author’s father, as a turning point in this narrative, influenced and inspired him to imagine a changed destiny. Arguing that knowledge is a pivotal transformative force, as if a philosophy of success, the author insists that paternal influence, especially moral and intellectual, smooths the path to success. Thus, the narration unfolds the author’s academic journey alongside professional experiences, yet emphasizes the importance of the eventual transitions in India and abroad. Besides playing extensive roles in various reputed institutions in India as an editorial mentor, media coordinator, and communication expert, his personality shone, reflecting his global professional attainment, illustrating personal evolution, and achieving a feat he had not even dreamed of.

A lion’s share in the emphasis on a decade-long professional engagement in Saudi Arabia, the book highlights how it proved to be more than a career journey. That period of international exposure provided him with an opportunity to immerse himself deeply in cultural and spiritual reflection, thus bringing about exceptional transformation and shaping his personality. Besides that, the book presents his philosophy of migration as a twofold approach—geographical and psychological—that affects the author in multiple ways. His philosophy frames migration as a necessity and an equal opportunity.

Foregrounding education as a central pillar and a symbol of optimism through knowledge, he believes that education could serve as a catalyst. It smoothed his way for social mobility and empowerment. They proved crucial in building his career and character, grounded in self-realization. A belief further empowering his journey was the struggle with financial hardships, professional challenges, and personal losses, which transformed into opportunities for self-improvement.

A deep-rooted narrative centered on family, especially his father, portrayed as a guiding light whose values continue to influence him even after death, conveys the depth of paternal love. This book also explores relationships beyond family, including mentors, colleagues, and friends, all of which are denoted with ‘soul connections,’ emotionally and morally significant. As an exemplary work of literature, the book defines faith subtly by weaving it into a narrative that shapes character. Faith plays a crucial role, especially during times of loss, in helping us introspect and reaffirm our strength for a new level. In such moments, the author presents reflections on life as spiritual dimensions.

Expressive language and a rich poetic approach imbue the book with a philosophical undertone, crafting layered narratives that mirror life’s unpredictability and argue that zeal and commitment are paths to success. It features a wide range of elements to enrich its narrative depth. A determined professional and reflective thinker, the author portrays real-life experiences that are grounded in ways that perfectly relate to and inspire readers as well. The thematic richness is in the philosophical explanation of education, migration, and socio-economic inequality. It is not confined to mere storytelling, thus enhancing an emotional depth.

A compelling read, Dream Roads is a thought-provoking memoir. Seamlessly blending narratives with a philosophical approach and reflective thinking about relationships, the book is a testament to the power of dreams. They are filled with education and valued resilience. It resonates with readers as inspiration and reassures that struggles are a gateway to aspirations when there is a focused goal. Success is achievable provided that determination and commitment significantly contribute to it. The book is a valuable addition to contemporary autobiographical literature as it illustrates that factors such as determination, strong values, and diverse experiences shape and reshape lives into something truly fulfilling. By imbuing the idea that life is a continuous learning journey, this book leaves a strong message.

The book is an inspiring, introspective testament. Valuable insights about life grounded in motivation and optimism, the book argues if pursued with perseverance and integrity, dreams can certainly lead to attaining success that is profoundly impactful.
