OmkaraIt wasn’t until I was a graduate student, in Oxford, in the late 1980s, that I began to discover Hindi cinema. (The word “Bollywood” existed then, but it wasn’t a catch-all term to describe a cinematic tradition of great, contradictory variety, and one that was only a strand – albeit the most publicised one – in Indian cinema as a whole.)
