Sydney Writers’ Festival: ‘Spirit’ friends Alice Walker and Archie Roach bond on stage
Their 20-year reunion was backstage at the Sydney Opera House; American activist-writer Alice Walker and Aboriginal musician Archie Roach embracing like long-lost friends.
The two pressed gifts into each other’s hands – her new book of essays, The Cushion In The Road, and his new compilation CD, Creation – yet their bonds were more spiritual than actual. They had met only a couple of times before.
“I adore him of course,” Walker told the ABC shortly before a mesmerising session before a full house as part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival.
“This is all spirit work. It’s hard to explain.”
