Indian education does not value vernacular literature: Javed Akhtar


JavedRenowned poet, author and lyricist Javed Akhtar was in the national capital on Monday to launch ‘In Other Words’, a rare compilation of poems from his earlier publications ‘Tarkash’ and ‘Lava’ in Hindi and Urdu and translated into English.

Akhtar engaged with audiences both young and old over a two-hour session answering questions on the book, the significance of Urdu literature and its revival among other languages. “The education system of this country and parents today do not treat literature at par with other subjects because it does not provide a means for earning,” he said.

He also said that the Urdu language is not lost because the elder generation never passed it on to the younger ones.
