Essay: Home is where the visa is? A perspective on Dubai’s Indian diaspora by Sangeetha Bhaskaran
1 min read
Sangeetha Bhaskaran’s essay explores the idea of the transformation of Dubai being a city to make a living to becoming a place to settle down in.
At dinner with friends, the season’s favourite topic crops up – real estate in Dubai. Opinions and speculations are shared, each trying to outdo the other. “X bought a townhouse here!” and “I’m telling you… prices will drop. Just give it a few months.” and, “I think off-plan is a better option if you have some liquid cash.” Then finally, “It really depends on your long-term plan.”
The highest population of the Indian diaspora resides in the UAE, namely Dubai, and yet this definition of ‘long-term’ for them remains a difficult, shape-shifting one, even more so today than two decades ago.
