Umar Hayat Hussain shares a poignant story of hope and survival while reflecting on the daily battles of life.
I constantly think of her. She was my everything. I always remember the golden days we spent together, sharing both joys and sorrows. I cannot forget her. Deep inside, I feel lonely, and whenever I am alone, memories of the time we spent together haunt me. She is gone now. A speeding car on the circular road took her life when she was crossing. I was left heartbroken and alone. I couldn’t bear the loss. Sometimes I feel like ending my life. I’ve tried many times before because of the loneliness I now feel without her.
I live in a small rented room, a modest furnished apartment. It has a half-round garret window, an oilcloth sofa, a table covered with books, two chairs, and an armchair that’s old and worn out. One evening, I lit a candle, sat down, and began reflecting on the day she left my world, leaving me alone. As I sat in deep thought, a strange loud voice murmured in my ears. I peered through the window and saw a small girl asking for help. Her mother was on a deserted road on that cold, wintry night, crying out in pain.
