Book Review: Twelve from a Taluk Town by Kalam Haidri (Translated from Urdu by Syed Sarwar Hussain)

1 min read

Sarah Ahmad reviews Twelve from a Taluk Town originally written in Urdu by Kalam Haidri and translated by Syed Sarwar Hussain (Kitaab, 2022) calling it a thought-provoking collection.

There are places we travel to – through words. And things we feel – through anecdotes. Yet we remain, in one place, still, invigorated, impassioned, and curious – about life. Novels, short stories, anthologies, narratives, taking us to strange, sometimes familiar places. Us becoming familiar with new thoughts, people, and new spaces.

When we attempt to review a piece of literature or a book, with stories translated into another language then we often ponder and even research the cultural, historical, and social standpoint of the original language, keeping in mind when the stories were originally written.
