Tao Lin is an American poet, short story writer and novelist, but he’s perhaps best known as a provocateur.

The 30-year-old was banned from New York University’s bookstores after being arrested for shoplifting in 2008. That same year, he advertised shares for the royalties for an unfinished novel and successfully raised $12,000.

He drew on the first experience for the book “Shoplifting at American Apparel” (2009, adapted into a movie last year), while the $12,000 allowed him to complete “Richard Yates” (2010). He has been known to take drugs like Adderall, a prescription amphetamine
