Hanif KureishiHanif Kureishi admits some trepidation at handing over 40 years of personal diaries and notebooks for anyone to see. “My biggest terror is that it might not be well written or it is naive or daft,” he said. Then there are the people he might upset. “There might be quite a lot of ‘I hate you bitch’ material.”

The writer was speaking as the British Library announced it had acquired his literary archive for £100,000, including the diaries he has kept since he was a teenager.
