Amritanshi Rathore reviews Manjima Misra’s The Ocean is Her Title (Book Street Publications, 2023) calling it a cryptic yet meaningful piece of work.
The Ocean is Her Title by Manjima Misra is a book that takes the reader on a journey of discovery and exploration of the unknown. The story progresses at a steady pace, building the reader’s curiosity not only about the plot but also about the characters. The protagonist, Poulomi, reflects on her life in different stages through conversations with her father or letters to her ‘lover’, and most importantly, through her passion for writing.
The human tendency to feel caged and dominated in one’s struggle with life and mind is beautifully demonstrated in the book and its characters. A father-daughter relationship can be complex but for Poulomi, her father’s religious efforts to help her define what healthy and safe love is, are a reflection of the complexities of relationships under strenuous circumstances. Poulomi is not an abstract however in a way she is, one of the mysteries that unravel slowly in the book. The plot will entertain, inspire, and help but it will also distract you momentarily.
