Introduction

What began as a fatal accident quickly became something far larger: deepening of a fracture that exposed how fragile Malaysia’s claims of racial harmony truly are.

An e-hailing driver, an Indian man, crashed into and killed a Malay motorist. He was reportedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The anger that followed was, in many ways, justified. A life had been lost because someone chose to drive while intoxicated. That is not just irresponsible behaviour on the part of Saktygaanapathy Ravichandran but a reckless, devastating act with irreversible consequences.
