Shivani Agrawal’s essay on Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma captures his musical journey while emphasizing all the learnings one can extract from his life.
Abstract: Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma’s contribution to classical music is immense. Taking a folk instrument from the confines of a region to the highest places of Indian classical and world music is exemplary. Along with this, the experimentation in Bollywood music is both creative and broad-minded. The serenity and the calm with which he played his music amazed me as a novice listener and learner. He almost exuded the personality of a saint. A lot could be learnt from his music and demeanour by beginners and experts alike.
Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma’s image looms large in my head. I haven’t seen him perform in person, but I still feel I have. I don’t have a very deep understanding of classical music but as a preliminary student, I have always made an attempt to understand it and Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma has made a deep impression on my mind.
