Recent international literary awards have shown the world a different side of China. In 2012, Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for literature and in August 2015 Liu Cixin won theHugo Award for his science novel The Three-Body Problem. The latter has become so popular that the venue for his speech "The Future of ChinaThrough Chinese Science Fiction" at the University of Sydney on Nov 3 has had to be movedto a larger auditorium. Last year, Jin Yucheng's Fan Hua (Blooming flowers) was taken to Salon Du Livre, France'slargest book fair, along with other contemporary Chinese literary works such as Bi Feiyu's Subei Youth "Don Quixote". The two books attracted the attention of Editions Philippe Picquier, a French publisher thatspecializes in translating books from China, Japan, South Korea, India, Vietnam and othercountries in Asia. This publisher reportedly purchased the copyright for Subei Youth "DonQuixote", a nonfiction work about the writer's childhood in East China's Jiangsu province, for130,000 euros ($143,000). (more…)
Of all the foreign influences in Vietnam, there is plenty of evidence that Chinese culture isamong the strongest. Many of the major bookstores in Hanoi, for example, display their selection of translatedChinese literature in the most coveted, high-profile spots. The study of the Chinese languageis increasing, courses at Vietnamese colleges are crowded with students and almost alluniversities have established Chinese faculties.
